State of Manipur focuses on popularizing handloom sector. As a step towards it, the Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans Co-Operative Society Ltd, organized a Handloom Readymade Garments Popularisation Awareness Programme at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal.

V Tualthang, Additional Director, Commerce and Industries Dept, Manipur during the programme said that the State gives importance to handloom and popularises its uses, as it is capable to provide an economic development.

Since ages, handloom has been every household's core occupation for the women folk. It is noticed that apart from women weavers there is a rise seen in the male weavers which shows the importance and the need to commercialise the State's handloom through advertisements in national and local papers and channels.

He also added that it should be take step towards popularizing it now in international market as well.

President of Handlooms Promotion Council, Chingtam Luwang, said that the only means of production of the State is handloom and according to the latest census, Manipur has about 3 lakhs of weavers.

All this makes it extremely important to have a regulate handloom policy in the State.
