YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2014-10-03 11:00:00 –

Fashion Design Council of Bangladesh in joint venture with Bengal Lounge will present a festival -- An Ode to Textile Weaves, to re-instill the pride in the mindset of the Bengali fashionist regarding heritage loom. The Tangail sari which epitomizes textile weaves; it has existed in the history of Bengal for quite a while, and till date.

The event will showcase a collection of Tangail saris that date back to the 1950s demonstrating the timelessness of this fabric. Parallel to that, there will be a contemporary collection of saris signifying the evolution in patterns and styles that this material has undergone throughout recent history.

Furthermore, visitors will have the opportunity to take a look at some of the techniques used in the weaving process such as the installation of tools and mechanisms to weave and finish the cotton fabric. The use of a series of designs and inspirations as developed in a team will be explored during this exhibition. The exhibition will further throw light on the future of this fabric, whilst charting its journey to its present day.

Maheen Khan, President, Fashion Design Council, opines that what was once the most beautiful fabric with delicate designs and subtle composition is transforming into what is more improvised. Diligent weavers remain unknown and the sari is becoming more of an occasional wear and sometimes used for specific types of clothing, namely suits and dupattas.

Through this event, the Fashion Council aims to revive the popularity of Bangladeshi textiles and expects to witness a more widespread use of the fabric.

Famed local designers Kuhu, Emdad Hoque, Farah Anjum Bari, Shaibal Saha, Shabana Ali, Maria Islam, Lipi Khandker, Shahrukh Amin, Nawshin Khair, Biplob Saha, Chondona Dewan, and Maheen Khan all worked together on bringing forward new interpretations of the old designs, changing forms and displaying their expertise.

Aarong will showcase their work on these timeless pieces and highlight the innovative and contemporary designs, whilst throwing light on all the work that goes on behind the scenes.

This event is supported by Square Toiletries and BRAC Bank, ideal for those seeking an intersection of art and fashion. The event will be held at Bengal Art Lounge, Road 60, Gulshan from 1st to the 4th October 2014 so do not forget to be part of a huge celebration of national pride.
