SPUN YARN EXPORT DECLINE PETERING – VISCOSE REVIVES SHARPLY

YnFx Yarn ExportWatch – June 09

June 2009 turned out to be a better month for spun yarn export since October 2008. During the month, exports declined by only 18% in terms of value 8% in terms of volume in comparison with the numbers in the corresponding month a year ago. It was also a substantial improvement over May numbers. About 47 million kgs of spun yarn was exported valued at US$128 million during June 2009 as against 51 million kgs and US$155 million last year. The overall unit price realization averaged US$2.70 /kg as against US$3.03/kg last year, implying an 11% fall. The Indian Re has depreciated by 10% during the 12-month period.

Nevertheless, the most positive aspect in June is the sharp revival of viscose yarn market and smaller decline in cotton yarn exports. During June, viscose yarn export increased 47% to US$9 million – a 12-month high. Volumes too increased 37% to 2.96 million kgs – a 14-month high. Unit value realization crossed the US$3/kg mark, only after the level seen last in December 2009. Brazil and Morocco were the major reviving markets for viscose yarn in June.

Its share of the world export market peaked in the Second World War and the late 1940s at 80% and even in the early 1970s accounted for 70% of its export earnings. However, polypropylene products began to substitute for jute products worldwide and the jute industry started to decline.
