Spun yarn exports declined sharply in July 2009 after June showing signs of revival. While the decline in June was only 14% compared to 44% in the past 5 months, the fall in July was back to over 20%. During the month, exports declined by 22% in terms of value 13% in terms of volume in comparison with the numbers in the corresponding month a year ago. About 45 million kgs of spun yarn was exported valued at US$123 million during July 2009 as against 61 million kgs and US$188 million last year. The overall unit price realization averaged US$2.72/kg as against US$3.09/kg last year, implying a 10% fall. The Indian Re has depreciated by 14% during the 12-month period.
Destination Lost and Found In July 2009, spun yarn was exported to 87 countries. Of these Asia accounted for 38% of export value, while South America accounted for another 21%. The third largest region was Middle East where 14% of spun yarn was exported. Reckoned with last year, export to Asia declined 33% this July while that to South America was down 24% and 50% in case of Middle East. However, the share of South America improved significantly compared to last year. West Europe which last year accounted for 13% of Indian spun yarn exports recorded 45% decline in July 2009 and its share dwindling to just 10%.
Counts in Demand - Ups and Downs
Nearly 250 types of various fibre-count combinations were exported in July 2009. Of these, only 11 formed the elite group and accounted for nearly 48% of total volume exports. Their cumulative value was US$59 million and volumes at 23 million kgs. As against this, 26 elites had fetched US$126 million in July 2008.

Cotton Yarn Cotton yarn exports declined 29% by volume and 38% in value in July 2009. A total of 33 million kgs were exported valued at US$89 million. Unit price realization was down by 13% to average US$2.72/kg. The realization was also 4 US cents lower than previous month. Cotton yarn accounted for 72% of all yarn exported from India during July 2009 as against 76% last year.....
Combed Cotton Yarn Of the 33 million kgs of cotton yarn exports, 24 million kgs were combed yarn with a unit value realization of US$2.78 per kg. combed yarn export was down by about 41% in terms of value. ...
Carded Cotton Yarn Of the 33 million kgs of cotton yarn exports, 2.3 million kgs were carded with a unit value realization of US$2.2 per kg. Carded yarn exports declined significantly by 65% in terms of value .....
Viscose Spun Yarn Viscose Yarn exports which showed significant improvement in June saw a reversal this month. In July 2009, 2.83 million kgs of viscose yarn was exported valued at US$9.00 million. Compared to a year ago, the volumes were down 0.8% while earnings declined 4%. Unit price realization was also down 4% during July 2009 compared to its year ago level.......
Polyester Spun Yarn Polyester yarn export surged during July 2009 after continuous declines for past several months. During the month, over 2.89 million kgs of polyester spun yarn was exported worth US$7.09 million. This was 32% higher than last year in terms of volume and 11% in terms of value. However, unit value realization was taking a beating falling 16% over last year......
PC Yarn In July 2009, 2.21 million kgs of PC spun yarn was exported worth US$5.17 million. Compared to last year, the volume was down 39% while earnings declined 45%. Unit value realization too declined by 10% during the period....
PV Yarn A total of 2.18 million kgs of PV spun yarn was exported during July 2009 worth US$6.07 million. In comparison with previous year, the volume was down 45% while value declined 49%. Unit value realization dropped by 6%....

Textile Trade and Relation with India
China is worth over US$1.2 billion for the Indian cotton and manmade textile industry (Fibre, yarn and fabrics). In 2008 the trade between the two countries was worth US$1.41 billion com-prising US$0.25 billion of exports to India and US$1.16 billion imports from India. While imports from India increased 10% those from the World was down 5%. Thus, India’s has become a do-minant supplier to China.
Cotton textile was largest component ac-counting for 75% in total imports from the entire world. Its import was valued US$7.45 billion in 2008. Of this, US$1.13 billion was from India accounting for 15% of total cotton textile import. During the year, it imported 27% of cotton fibre from India, the single largest component in trade with China....
