VISCOSE STAPLE FIBRE
Overview
During the 1990s until 2002 it appeared that demand for viscose staple would continue to recede fast and it was destined to become a minor fibre used in some small specific applications. Favourably, 2003 the downward trend in viscose staple demand was reversed. Subsequently output also began to rise. Although viscose staple is still a relatively small volume fibre, especially in comparison to polyester staple and filament, it is currently the fastest growing fibre, with global viscose staple production growing at 7.4% per annum between 2005 and 2007.
In comparison, polyester staple output grew at 7.6% per annum over the same period. The upturn in viscose staple demand and production has taken place in a rapidly changing global market, with global textile production shifting from the high cost developed markets to the low cost emerging markets, notably China. More recently India and other Asian countries have become increasingly important as low cost regions for textiles production.
