Nylon filament yarn markets were quiet this week while prices of some specs changed moving upwards on support of rising input costs. Inventories of some specs were low to support their values. In China, major producers were prudent about running, with operating rates at 50-60% capacity due to power restrictions, partially tightening supplies. Downstream textile mills were also running at low capacity in general, resulting in modest buying interest.

Nylon Chain: Benzene price spurts [ 23 Aug, 2010]

The nylon markets saw benzene prices rebounding significantly in Asia and European markets although the movement in crude oil prices was discouraging. The concern over the future outlook had a negative influence upon the markets but the low inventories brought buyers back into the market. Supply too was a bit tight supporting prices to move upward.

Downstream, Asian caprolactum market stabilized on modest demand although feedstock benzene prices rebounded. However, buyers were cautious over taking any offers as the drop in crude oil futures limited the support to caprolactum market. Global supplies were reportedly healthy as operating rates were high.

Asian nylon chips market on firm caprolactum values which formed a stronger cost support. Producers and traders intended to raise their offers but were largely unsuccessful. In nylon filament market, FDYs in China were on the uptrend in line with modest buying interest from textile market and high feedstock values coupled with declining inventory while POYs and DTYs producers were cautious of raising price due to modest buy-rise replenishments of textile mills.

Nylon Chain: Caprolactum surges US$100 a ton [ 02 Aug, 2010]

Benzene markets opened up further as crude prices stabilized and prices gained on support by restarts of many derivative units in China improving overall demand in Asian region. They also supported downstream caprolactum markets which saw prices soaring in Asian markets.

Caprolactum supplies were also tight amidst robust demand from nylon tire cord fabric industry. The shortages are expected to last until October due to the many turnarounds in Japan. The surge in caprolactam prices supported nylon chip market and producers raised their offers. Demand from downstream textiles and tire sector was also stronger, giving enough support for chip market. The cost pressure on nylon yarn market increased tremendously with the surge in caprolactum and nylon chips prices. Given the rebounding tendency, nylon filament yarn producers hiked prices in a narrow range as demand began to strengthen.
