Consumption
of acrylic fibers in Brazil increased 25% to 48,000
metric tons in 2000. Imports increased by 75 percent
to 17,600 tons during the same year. Consumption of
acrylic fibers dropped slightly in 2001 and some fibers
were exported. In 2002 about 33,000 tons of acrylic
fibers were produced. Production is expected to increase
in the future, as Crylor plans to expand capacity by
2006. Demand for acrylic fibers is projected to grow
moderately through 2009. |

Consumption
declined sharply in Japan between 1997 and 1999 due
to weak demand from apparel. In 1999, the production
decreased because of sluggish domestic demand and decrease
in export. Consumption is expected to recover slowly
as Japanese economy recovers. The consumption increased
by 30% in 2000; it is expected to be flat or decrease
slightly in the future. Demand in 2001 took a large
drop as more fiber was exported from Japan and more
finished apparel goods were imported back to Japan.
