The “World Fibre & Taiwan – Trends in Demand and Supply” is the Fifth compendium from Yarnsand-Fibers covering the trends in global demand and supply of textile fibre/filament industry.

In this Report we have assesses the impact of the Global Slowdown on textile fibre/filament industry including natural fibres, particularly cotton, and how each country performed in this scenario. The analysis assesses the positions of fibres/filaments industry as events unfolded. The evolution of Global Slowdown and its spread across the world has been critically documented in perspective of textile in-dustry. The demand crunch began in mid-2008 and continued into 2009. Also documented are the approaches of developed countries and the stimulus packages announced by various governments.

HIGHLIGHTS

Taiwan is the fifth largest producer manmade fibre/filament in the world accounting for 3.3% of world produce. During 2008, it produced 2.04 million tons of manmade fibres as against 2.49 million tons it produced in 2007. This implies a massive drop of 18%. It was the fifth largest producers of acrylic staple fibre, third in nylon and polyester filament, fourth in polyester staple fibre and fifth largest viscose staple fibre producer in 2008. However, its share has been steadily declining since 1990 as China was ramped up faster than any global economies.

About 6% of World’s polyester filament yarn a nd 4% of polyester staple is produced in Taiwan. In 2008, their production declined 14% much faster than the declines recorded between 2000 and 2007. In case of nylon, though it accounted for 9% of global supplies, recorded decline in 2008. Nylon pro-duction was down 26% as against -0.5% annual decline recorded in 2000-07 period. In 1990s, produc-tion had expanded 8% per annum.
