Khādī or khaddar originated in India as a fully hand crafted textile. It encompasses a
lifestyle, a simple pure process of forming yarn and creating cloth by spinning and weaving by hand
without electricity. The raw materials may be cotton, silk, or wool which are spun into threads on a
spinning wheel called a charkha then made into a limited length of textile on a handloom. Khadi is
a very essential cloth, it has the soft twist imparted by the hand- this maintains the yarn
hairiness to an extent, which gives maximum comfort. It is the only fabric where the play of texture
is so unique that no two fabrics will be absolutely identical, thus lending it exclusivity and
inimitability in terms of feel and texture. It is a versatile fabric, cool in the summer and warm in
the winter(The loom used in the weaving of Khadi interlaces the threads in the end textile in a
manner that allows maximum air to permeate to the body) Khadi is acknowledged as one of the most
comfortable fabrics ever known, it is resilient and becomes even more soft and coveted with wear.
Company Profile
We are a creative collective making products "from the earth up" with consciousness and joy. We are motivated by the possibility that we all can do our part to alleviate poverty and divert the ecological disaster our world faces because of ignorance and greed. We support Slow Fashion which is all about designing, producing, consuming and living better. Slow fashion is not time-based but quality-based (which has some time components). Slow is not the opposite of fast there is no dualism but a different approach in which designers, buyers, retailers and consumers are more aware of the various impacts of their products on workers, communities and ecosystems.
AtelierOM will continually strive to learn and constructively apply new techniques for sustainable design. We aim to establish new markets & internationally and seek to implement progressive new systems for opportunity & advances in education for areas in crisis & destitution.
AtelierOM aims to fabricate only that which is kind to All. From concept through the entire life cycle of each product, it is our opinion that this death of a product is the responsibility of the creator foremost then the consumer. Thus we produce bio- responsibly and we will invest in post consumer NGOS & recycling units for our products where we manufacture. We have dyed and undyed products; our dyed products will be designated as Natural or Azo Free pigments in a range of colors and shades. Our textiles include an array of eco, transitional and organic Indian khadi cottons of both common and aspired weaves. We also use locally woven sustainable wools and Ahimsa (Peace) silks hand-loomed to imperfect perfections. Good design is ultimately sensible for all seasons and all moods.
All our apparel embellishments are made by the hands of traditional craftspeople whom we encourage and are supportive of their livelihoods. We believe in the importance of empowering them as Designer Artisans. At present we employ only a few positve Indian NGOs, in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana, to fabricate our collections; thereby keeping our Social Responsibility paramount in our production. We will always consider zero waste design techniques as well as reuse, recycle and resource materials naturally. This is our Manifesto. This is a Slow Fashion Revolution.
