Uzbekistan aims to produce over 1 mln tonnes of cotton fiber in 2007
Dated- 18 Oct , 2006 - Uzbekistan
Cotton fiber production in Uzbekistan will exceed 1 million tonnes in 2007, of which 750,000-800,000 tonnes will be exported, Uzbek Foreign Economic Relation, Investments and Trade Minister Elyor Ganiyev said at the opening of the International Uzbek Cotton Fair in Tashkent on Tuesday.
"Uzbekistan currently ranks fifth in the world in terms of cotton production and second in terms of cotton exports," he said.
However, cotton exports will be slowing down in the near future, he said. "The main reason for this is the setting up of new textileproduction and an increase in capacity to domestically process cotton fiber," he said.
According to preliminary estimates, Uzbekistan will have capacity to process 265,000-270,000 tonnes of cotton fiber in 2006. "But we expect that cotton processing volumes in Uzbekistan will amount to about 500,000 in the next 2-3 years," Ganiyev said.
The ministry said some 350 foreign partners from 32 countries would be taking part in the Uzbek Cotton Fair this year. Roughly 500,000 tonnes of cotton fiber from the 2006 harvest will be put up for sale at the fair.
Uzbekistan increased cotton fiber production 3.2% year-on-year to 665,410 tonnes in January-August 2006.
