India expects to double textile exports to Dubai
14 Jan, 2010 - India
India expects to double its man-made textile exports to Dubai to $2 billion within the next two years, a top official of a textile body in India said. Last year, Dubai was the second largest destination for Indian man-made fibre exports worldwide, valued at $3.4 billion.

“India exports around $1 billion or 30 per cent of its total exports to Dubai, which are further re-exported to other Gulf and African countries, Ganesh Kumar Gupta, Chairman, Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), told Khaleej Times over phone from Mumbai.

“These are growing markets and we are expecting to double exports in the next two years,” Gupta said.

India needs to further enhance its trade relations with Dubai and other Gulf nations for this particular sector and for this purpose SRTEPC is organising a 2-day high-profile business-to-business called: ‘Source India 2010,’ Gupta said.

The event to engage importers especially from the Gulf Cooperation Council, Middle Eastern countries and African continent. Over 100 manufacturers from the industry will display a wide range of products to more than 150 international buyers from over 18 countries from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.

The Indian government led by the Commerce Ministry has taken a special initiative of playing the host for all delegates, who will be coming from the Gulf region as well as from the African countries.

“Through ‘Source India 2010’ we will connect the Indian man-made textile manufacturers and exporters with leading international buyers as well as Indian brands and retailers, and substantially raise trade volumes between India and the prime markets for these products, from the current level of $3.4 billion. We are expecting 1,500 to 2,000 informed visitors to the event,” Gupta said.

Dubai alone confirmed around 45 importers and businessmen for the event, which will develop more trade relations between the UAE and India, he said. Dubai is open for both ways trade with India and they can export and import for the UAE, Gupta said.

The main items being exported to Middle East are Polyester Filament Fabrics, Polyester Spun Fabrics, Polyester Viscose Fabrics, Synthetic Filament Fabrics, Shirtings, Other made-ups, Shawls/Scarves, Muffler, Dress Materials, Tyre yarn, High Tenacity Yarn, Polyester Textured Yarn and Polyester Staple Fibre. “Recently we had a buyer/seller meeting in two big cities in Saudi Arabia i.e. Riyadh and Jeddah. It was very good event,” he said. He said that in October this year, Government of India is planning an exclusive textile exhibition called: ‘Made in India’ in Dubai for man made fabric.
