Tajikistan has harvested 295,815 tonnes of raw cotton this year, down from 353,115 tonnes in 2008, the Central Asian state's Agriculture Ministry said on Monday, adding that yields would recover next year. "Heavy raining in May and June this year forced cotton to be resown on large areas which led to low yields," ministry official Saidmurod Bahriddinov told reporters.
He said ex-Soviet Tajikistan expected to harvest 370,000 tonnes of raw cotton next year. Tajikistan ranked 11th among global cotton exporters in 2008, shipping abroad 350,000 bales, according to the National Cotton Council of America.
