    The The Rs.1,30,000 crore Indian textile industry had demanded reduction in excise and customs duties, invigorated Duty Entitlement Passbook Scheme rates (DEPB) and refreshed export incentives. This would pave way to achieve the US$40 billion export target by 2010. Some expected extension of Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) beyond March 2007.

    The Budget has disappointed the industry by continuing with the existing tax structure. The reduction in import duty on polyester and its raw material is inexplicable. However, the Budget highlights the continuation of TUF and higher allocation for STIP and TUF schemes. Handloom sector is now brought under TUF scheme.
